In layman's terms, GERD and acid reflux (GER) are commonly associated with food. Yet, according to the American College of Gastroenterology, GERD is not just associated with certain foods, such as garlic or pepper. It is also triggered by some types of medicines, such as amiodarone (Boniva), which act as acid suppressors.

What’s the connection between GERD and hernia?

Although it is not clear what causes these conditions, researchers suggest that the presence of acid in the stomach can cause a hernia in the abdominal cavity.

Some research suggests that people who take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as Nexium, Prevacid and Prilosec, which are used to treat GERD, may have a greater risk of developing a hernia.

In fact, there is a 50 percent increase in the risk of developing a hernia in PPI users. However, in another study, researchers found no association between PPIs and the risk of developing a hernia in general.

How are GERD and hernia connected?

It seems that the two conditions are often linked. In fact, hernias are a common complication of GERD, and about half of GERD patients will develop one or more hernias. Even when people with a hernia get surgery, a complication called hematoma is common.

What are the symptoms?

Like acid reflux, GERD symptoms may include:

• Repeated, unexplained burping

• Excess regurgitation

• Rectal burning

• Unusual tasting urine

• Small stools

• Nausea or upset stomach

• Change in bowel habits (excessive constipation or diarrhea)

Rectal bleeding what is the treatment?

While there are no specific treatments for GERD, you may find relief in a few key ways:

• Lifestyle changes

• Lifestyle modifications

• Digestive enzymes

• Medications

Some people need a lot of time to lose their GERD. This is the case for those who have severe heartburn or other symptoms that have persisted for over a year.

Other methods may be helpful in some people. Check with your doctor to see what treatment might be right for you.
