monument to native Mexican Aztec leader Cuauht...

We all know being in a position of leadership is an attractive quality to have, but do we really know what it takes to earn it?

It takes a daily march of persistence with your goals in mind, regardless of your position in life.  There are no natural born leaders, there are just people that persist in the face of adversity when all others have given up.   If you can take the pain the longest, you will end up in first place.

Did you do any of these things today…

  • You spoke your mind in the face of authority.
  • You said no, when you knew it would be emotionally easier to say yes.
  • You acted on something that made you nervous, but you knew the benefits of trying outweighed the risks of doing nothing.
  • You faced possible criticism and took action anyway because it matter to you.
  • You owned up to making a mistake, but only after trying with the best of intentions.

Most people never do this on a daily basis. Most people avoid what are simple imagined possible confrontations. Most people avoid awkward moments in life, just to go along to get along.

Leaders aren’t like most people.

You can’t pretend your way into leadership, you have to practice what it means to be a leader every day…  it means to be willing to do something despite the general consensus, in the face of criticism, because it matters and it’s the right thing to do.

That’s what leaders do.  If you want to become a “leader of men”, start by becoming a leader of your life.  The rest will follow.
